Join the Friends of the Libraries Book Group on November 12th @ 11:30 a.m. for a discussion of The Twelve Tribes of Hattie by Ayana Mathis.
New Friends are always welcome!
Abstract: In 1923, fifteen-year-old Hattie Shepherd flees Georgia and settles in Philadelphia, hoping for a chance at a better life. Instead, she marries a man who will bring her nothing but disappointment and watches helplessly as her firstborn twins succumb to an illness a few pennies could have prevented. Hattie gives birth to nine more children whom she raises with grit and mettle and not an ounce of the tenderness they crave. She vows to prepare them for the calamitous difficulty they are sure to face in their later lives, to meet a world that will not love them, a world that will not be kind. Captured here in twelve narrative threads, their lives tell the story of a mother’s monumental courage and the journey of a nation.
The Sidney Memorial Public Library invites the public for the unveiling of the first completed part of a project to digitize our local newspapers dating back to 1882. On Monday, November 4th from 5:30 – 7 p.m. part 1 of the project, which includes the Sidney Record and the Sidney Enterprise from 1882 – 1936, will be demonstrated in the library’s Public Computing Center.
This collaboration between the Sidney Library and the Sidney Historical Association to digitize all of the local newspapers currently stored on microfilm at the Historical Association museum will allow the public to view these archives online.
The Friends of the Sidney Libraries and the Sidney Central Schools Alumni Association have provided the matching funds to an O’Connor Foundation grant that the library received last spring for the project. The project, which includes the Sidney Record, The Sidney Enterprise, and the Tri-Town News, will be completed in full in the next year.
Join us at the library for light refreshments, a demonstration, and a chance to try out this long awaited digital archive.
Be sure to stop in our Smart Community Room to view the artwork of local artist Linda Kamrowski. Working in oils, this self-taught artist from the Rockdale-Mt Upton area, will display her creations this November.
Don’t miss it!
